The Sillustani tour is one of the most enigmatic Peru travel experiences available in the Altiplano. Located just 34 kilometers from the city of Puno, this archaeological site is home to the famous "Chullpas"—gigantic funerary towers built by the Colla and Inca civilizations. Set on a peninsula surrounded by the hauntingly beautiful Lake Umayo, Sillustani offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and natural serenity.
Sillustani provides a deeper understanding of the Andean concept of death and the afterlife. These towers, some reaching up to 12 meters in height, demonstrate an engineering precision. It is an essential stop for anyone exploring the Lake Titicaca region, offering a perfect afternoon of photography and spiritual reflection under the vast Andean sky.
Your journey begins with a convenient pickup from your hotel in Puno. We travel across the high plateau (Altiplano), where you can spot local herds of alpacas and sheep against the backdrop of the Andes.
Upon arrival, we start a gentle walk uphill toward the main necropolis. Our expert guide will lead you through the different sectors of the site, explaining the significance of the "Chullpas." You will see the transition from the rustic Colla style to the perfectly fitted Inca stonework.
As the afternoon light turns golden, you will have ample time to explore the Intiwatana and take photos of the towers overlooking Lake Umayo. This is the most magical time to be at the site, as the shadows lengthen and the history of the place feels almost tangible.
On our way back to Puno, we often stop at a traditional farmhouse to learn about the local agriculture and taste some "Chaco" (edible clay) with boiled potatoes, a true ancestral Peru travel experience.
We arrive back at your hotel, perfectly timed for you to enjoy dinner at one of Puno's local restaurants.
Acclimatization: Sillustani is slightly higher than Puno. Ensure you have spent at least one day at high altitude before the tour.
Best Season: The dry season (April to October) offers the clearest skies, but the rainy season (November to March) turns the landscape a vibrant green.
Safety: Stick to the marked paths to protect both yourself and the archaeological remains.
Photography: The best light for photography is between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM.

The Chullpas are funerary towers built to house the remains of high-ranking nobles. They are considered portals to the afterlife and are oriented toward the rising sun.
The site sits at approximately 3,950 meters (12,959 feet). It is a bit higher than Puno city, so a slow walking pace is recommended.
The walk is short but involves a slight incline at the beginning. It takes about 15-20 minutes to reach the top. It is considered an "easy" difficulty level.
Yes! We offer private transfers that include a stop at Sillustani, as it is located conveniently between Puno and the Juliaca (JUL) airport.
Originally, the site was developed by the Colla culture. Later, when the Incas conquered the region, they added their own towers, which are distinguishable by their superior stone-carving finish.
Lake Umayo is a beautiful volcanic lagoon located at the foot of the Sillustani peninsula. It is home to a protected island (Isla Umayo) where you can sometimes see vicuñas.
