Pallay Punchu Mountain Tour: Cusco's Newest Rainbow Trek
Step off the beaten path and explore Pallay Punchu Mountain (Apu T’acllo), the most breathtaking and jagged geological marvel in Cusco. While Vinicunca is world-famous, Pallay Punchu offers a unique spectacle: sharp, knife-edge ridges that mirror the intricate patterns of a traditional Andean poncho. This full-day trek takes you deep into the southern highlands, where vibrant ochre, red, and purple minerals paint a landscape that feels like another planet.
This experience is tailor-made for nature lovers and adventure seekers looking for exclusivity and raw beauty. From the summit, you will witness a stunning contrast between the multicolored jagged peaks and the deep blue of the massive Langui Layo Lagoon. Standing at an altitude of over 15,400 feet (4,700 m), this destination promises a spiritual and photographic journey unlike any other in the Andes.
ITINERARY
Your journey begins with an early pick-up from your Cusco hotel between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. We will drive south through the scenic heart of the Andes, passing rural communities and high-altitude pampas until we reach the district of Layo. After a 3.5-hour drive, we will enjoy a hearty Andean breakfast featuring local bread, eggs, and traditional coca tea to help you acclimatize. Around 9:00 a.m., we reach Sallani, our trailhead, where your expert guide will provide a final safety briefing and trekking poles.
The hike to the summit of Apu T’acllo is a sensory delight; as we ascend to 15,400 ft, you’ll encounter high-altitude wetlands and crystalline lagoons. We expect to reach the peak by 11:00 a.m., giving you ample time to explore the sharp "poncho ridges" and take iconic photos with the Langui Lagoon in the background. After descending, we return to Layo for a comforting local lunch (regional trout or lamb). Finally, we head back to Cusco, arriving near the Plaza de Armas between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m.
