Yes, it is highly recommended. The city of Arequipa is located at 2,335 m (7,660 ft), but the route to the Colca Canyon crosses the Volcano Viewpoint at 4,910 m (16,109 ft). We suggest spending at least one day in the city to adapt to the altitude before the excursion, staying hydrated and eating lightly.
Sighting the Andean Condor is a natural phenomenon and, although not 100% guaranteed, the probabilities are very high during the dry season (April to November), especially in the mornings at the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint. In the rainy season (January to March), visibility may be lower due to clouds, but the green landscape of the valley is incomparable.
The Full Day tour is ideal if you have limited time; it departs very early (approx. 3:00 AM) and returns at night. The 2 Days / 1 Night tour is more relaxed, allowing you to sleep in the town of Chivay or Yanque, enjoy the hot springs calmly, and avoid the fatigue of a long trip, making it the favorite option for families.
The weather in Arequipa is sunny and dry, but in the Colca Canyon, the temperature drops drastically at night and early morning. We recommend dressing in "layers": a light shirt for the day, and a warm jacket or windbreaker for the afternoon/evening. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes.
